From the playdate files

Posted on January 20, 2007 by dc

Char at Keystrokes sent me an email informing me about her Blog Carnival on Playdate files.

I thought for a while because for a moment, I couldn’t recall if Clayton had any official playdates! We live in a neighbourhood of mature married couples with grown up children and the only playdate Clayton truly has is 3 year old Rachel who lives next door to us. But most of the time, Clayton would be asking to get over to her house because of the tricycle that is parked on the porch. I must admit that I don’t put in a lot of efforts in finding him any playdates. The interesting thing is his playdates often turn out to be our friends! Clayton loves having Tracy and David over, our very close couple friend who adores Clayton and babysits him during our seminars. He seems to enjoy having adults as playdates more than kids his age.
However, Clayton looks forward to Sunday School. I observed him many times to find him protesting gently when the other kids snatched away his favourite toy. He usually moves away to do something else but once, I saw him fighting back when a boy tried to grab his musical bells from his hands. I stood there watching, curious to see how he handled the toddler conflict. I was glad that he wasn’t violent, neither did he give up his bells. He grabbed them and ran to his mummy!
Having playdates allow me to know my son more – his temperaments, his problem-solving, communication and social skills. Though he prefers to play his own train track and blocks, he enjoys miggling with bigger boys and girls. Somehow, he just doesn’t quite enjoy company of his age at this point!

Another place where he has his playdates is a ‘shop and drop’ place where we leave Clayton there when we need to attend any business meetings. He loves being there though he does cranked up at one stage. We enjoy ‘taking a little break’ that way as a couple while he has his fun on the slides and all the pretend-play toys. It is a treat for him as we do not have these big bulky toys at home.

What about you? Do your kids have any playdates? If you have a story to share, drop a comment with a link of your story at Casual Keystrokes.
