Should a corporate blog has its own domain?

Posted on February 06, 2007 by dc

I’m beginning to notice that corporate websites have started to get into the blogging action. Having a blog for the company is a great way to connect and build relationships with your current and potential clients. A company website serves as a platform to introduce your company, the products and services you offer, it helps to provide clients the necessary information to understand your company better. In fact, a well-designed and informative website can be a powerful marketing and advertising tool for your company. So the question is: If you decide to start a corporate blog, should you create an extension from your company’s URL or should you create an entirely new and independent domain?

Liz Strauss in her article states why it is better to have a new domain than a spin-off:

  • Google ranks domain names higher and faster than a sub-domain name. That means better chance of being crawled by the search engines, draws more traffic and increase your web presence.
  • A blog that stands alone is more “linkable.” People prefer to link to the blog and the blogger, not to the company and its products. A blog carries an unique ‘voice’ and it’s more personal. Links are helpful in increasing your blog’s page rank.
  • A blog with it’s own domain is like a child that has moved away from home. The thoughts and ideas presented there are perceived as being more independent, more authentic, and further from corporate influence. In more opinion, it is friendlier and more acceptable among bloggers.
