Well, how often do you get three ladies in a family to work together besides a family restaurant business. Meet Joan, and this pair of lovely twin sisters, Janice and Susan as they share about how they began their online store together. I got to know Susan and Janice through the Ultimate Blog Party at 5minutesformom earlier this year and this is the first pair of twins I had befriended in the blogosphere! Here is their beautiful story...
How did this home office begin for you both?
Susan and I were both looking for an alternative way to earn an income, but still be at home. Susan was a software developer and worked in a very stressful environment that required her to work lots of overtime. So, even before Susan conceived her daughter, we began to look for a way for us to work from home.
Meanwhile, our mom Joan, who had worked with our father up until his unexpected, early death, came up with the idea of having online stores. Joan is an over-achiever “go big or go home†kind of woman and so, when she set out to educate herself about how to work online, she went all out!
So after many months of researching and educating ourselves, we opened our two online stores, http://www.pedalcarsandretro.com and http://www.a-rocking-horse-to-love.com. We give full credit to Joan for the stores. It is her energy, her dedication and her vision that has made them such a success. As well, we could never have done it without Susan’s experience as a software developer.
We started our blog, http://www.5minutesformom.com, a year ago. I love to write and to think creatively, and so it was a natural move for us to branch into blogging.
What are the perks and challenges of working together?
Joan, Susan and I are so blessed to be able to work together. We have an incredible opportunity to work as a team, with each of us bringing our unique talents and skills to the table. We simply could not do our business without each one of us – it takes us all to make it work.
But the greatest perk has to be that Susan and I get to “share†our kids. Both Susan and I have only one child each. So working together (and living only two blocks from each other) allows us to have our kids grow up together as “siblings†for each other. While we do hire some babysitting, most of the time either Susan or I have the kids and the other one works. While this makes life very busy and doesn’t leave too much down time, it is such a joy to love and look after each other’s child as our own.
As for the challenges – they are just the same as in any family relationship. We spend a lot of time together – often under stressful, time-crunch situations - so we can get a bit tense. And with family, you tend to let your stress show and not put on the brave face that you would with co-workers. But, on the flip side, as family we are totally committed to each other and to our business, so, no matter how bad the day is for one of us, all is forgiven.
Janice & Jackson Describe your biz Our business has two components. We have our stores http://www.pedalcarsandretro.com and http://www.a-rocking-horse-to-love.com that are growing nicely and provide a little bit of profit, and as well we have our blog http://www.5minutesformom.com. Having online stores is hard work! In the toy market where the margins are small, it takes a ton of work to turn a profit. But we love our stores and we are working hard to grow them. We started http://www.5minutesformom.com just one year ago and have been blown away by its success. Susan and I dedicate far more time to it than we initially imagined we would and we are excited about its future. Fortunately, when things get too busy at 5 Minutes for Mom, we still have Joan working day and night to keep our stores running.

What is your advice for anyone who likes to work from home. The reason we are seeing some success is because we work as a team. Now I realize most women don’t have a mom and a twin sister just blocks away to start a business with but, if possible, finding a like-minded, motivated and reliable partner is invaluable. I do recommend partners with caution though. For a team to work under the stress of long hours with little pay, all the players must be totally committed and understand they will have to work incredibly hard to make it work. What do you get most out of this business? I think what all three of us love the most is that this business is ours. We call the shots. We decide what we want to do. And we are building a future for ourselves. We don’t mind the long hours because this is our business and we are working for the success of our company. April 6th, 2007 at 7:51 pmI enjoy reading stories like this. My hubby is my inspiration for me being a WAHM.
how inspiring and fun – great photos (great juggling) and all a circle of family love… wow. Our neighbors here in Sausalito share work and family – and shopping duties sometime. So helpful. I am a former WSJ reporter.. another is an architect, a retired FBI agent and so on…
Other times we turn to a job referral community here called LaborFair.com in the S.F. bay area, knowing we can find reputable, nearyb help fast and, at the same time, help the ones we hire move up the economic ladder… it is another form of mommy sisterhood methinks
April 8th, 2007 at 12:42 amDoris, What a great site for WAH women! I’ll be sure and link you on my blog. I love 5 Minutes for Mom, even though I’m just a WAH woman that never had the privilege of raising any children.I was laid off of my customer service job after 12-1/2 years in November; and at 58 years (young) and with multiple chemical sensitivities, I really wanted to find a job working from home. Initially my husband taught me basic computer skills (at work I only had a monitor!). He was so patient and supportive. Now, I’m reading everything I can on blogging (websites, Dummies books, and
blogger ‘helpers’ online) to learn. It’s been so exciting! I feel 20 years younger. Truly when God closes a door, he opens a window. Again, thanks, for the great resources all of you! Pam
Hi Pam, good to have you here. Thanks for sharing and I’m encouraged and inspired by your desire to learn and grow. You are so right… when God closes a door, He opens a window… that is so so true.
