How to get my online store going? Anyone?

In the last few days, I have been researching and browsing online stores in the Net. I have no experience in setting up an online store and worse still, an internet marketing friend of mine scared me on the high costs of setting up an eCommerce platform and shopping cart.
While I usually care alot on the aesthetics and design of the website, I must get into perspective that the store must fulfill the basic criteria of a good online store. This means it must user-friendly with nice, dramatic photos to captivate the consumers, equipped with a reliable payment gateway and efficient shipping system.
Oh dear... I'm so new to this. While I continue with my research, I will be open to suggestions, advices, tips and help! Please feel free to email me at howomen AT gmail DOT com

I toyed with the idea of starting an online store before and I checked out Yahoo and some of the other big name e-commerce sites and they were so pricey! I didn’t really find a company that had the features that I wanted for the price.
I’m assuming you want to sell your own goods rather than set up a store that you can pick and choose stock from a supplier? If you want one that comes with items you can choose to sell you could try one that Bret from PPP put me on to – It’s called Shopster:

That’s probably not what you’re looking for but they have a huge amount of items to choose from and considering what you get I think the price is reasonable.
