full day school for 3 yr old?

Posted on July 02, 2007 by dc

Yesterday, we went to an open house organized by a newly renovated kindergarten. The photos in the brochure were impressive. Nice water feature at the entrance, a mini concert hall, spacious play area, fun playrooms for the children, neat canteen all in a huge compound. We took Clayton there for a time of fun and play as a carnival was being held to kick off the open house.

After checking out the curriculum and schedule, I found out that they had a full day program of 8.30 – 4pm. It was Montessori in the morning for 3 hours, lunch, then followed by Mandarin classes in the afternoon. DH was very happy to hear that and I could guess what was in his mind. He was keen to register Clayton is the full day program next year so that he could work in peace and pursue his interest in the realtor business.

I wasn’t too pleased about it. Personally, I felt that it would be too tiring for a 3 year old to stay in school for a full day. I wasn’t sure if it was the right thing to do and didn’t think I like the idea.

Mommies, what do you think? Is a full day school (8.30am – 4pm) too much for a 3 year old?

Both my kids attend Montessori School from 8:30 – 11:30, five days a week. (from Sept to June) My son started at 3 years and my daughter started at 2.5 years. I think it’s a perfect morning for them.

Both my husband and I work out of our home so having them out and in school full day would SO work for us, but we personally think a full day would be too much. {especially for a three year old.} My son will be five at the end of September, but we’re still not sending him a full day.

I think I’d miss them too much :) They grow up so fast!

ya, that’s what I thought – they grow so fast and I know I will miss him if he’s in school for a full day. Thanks for sharing :)

Unless you need it so you can work, I think it’s too long for a 3 y/o, too. By the time a child is 5 or 6 a full day won’t seem so long to you or your kids.

    Yes… I believe so. As it is, I don’t think I’m prepared :)

i agree with the kate because staying at school for a 3 year kid is really a big deal. i feel that half day is more comfortable…

    Yes, I agree too :)
