Couple of months ago, I did a review on a range of natural body products for moms and babes known as Bug and Pickle. After reading all the raving reviews of the products, I went on to read more about the people behind this lovely online store. It turned out that the store was the brainchild of two sisters - Bug (Kim) and Pickle (Nicole), who were also entrepreneurs in a successful and unique spa in Vancouver, Bloom Essentials Spa. I'm honoured to share the story of how these two sisters start their online business... and after you read their story, don't forget to check out the great range of wholesome body products in the store too!
How did this home office begin?
In the beginning my sister and I were producing our products and shipping out of our existing boutique spa in Vancouver (we have a small retail space where we sell our lotions and potions as well as a small day spa). When we decided to launch the wholesale portion of our company with the introduction of our Bug & Pickle line we really thought we could manage to use the space for everything...but it didn't take long to discover that at least one of us was going to have to move out! There simply was not enough room to work and with spa customers coming in and out all day it became impossible to function. And my little home office was born!
Perks and Challenges of Working at Home
Honestly, I love working from home. I can set up my space exactly how I want it and no one can change it on me. My work attire is totally up to me (right now it's my p.j.'s) and I love the freedom of having a flexible schedule. My biggest challenge is having a clear start and end time to my day. Because I am up early in the morning I tend to get at it straight way but then suddenly it's early evening and I have been going all day without really realizing it! I do have to make a point of leaving time for myself everyday.
Our Business
Bug & Pickle is a wholesome line of bath and body care created specifically for mums and babes. As trained aromatherapists, we constantly had people asking for natural remedies to common issues facing new mums and new babies. Using the power of essential oils we came up with several products that heal and soothe and that people feel good about using. Our products range from 96% to 100% natural and are all handmade in Canada. Mums love to discover our Belly Cream (fight those stretch marks!) while they're pregnant and then continuing with the line to pamper baby with products such as our Baby Lotion and Diaper Gel when they arrive.
Advice for Those Considering Working at Home
As I mentioned above, my greatest advice would be to clearly define your work day so you don't burn yourself out. Really try to squash the urge to check your email just one last time before bed! Also, spend some time and a bit of money creating a space that works for you and that you enjoy.
What do you get most out of this business?
I love creating new products and new packaging. And I love having mums contact me to say they love our products! That really is the best feeling.
